Rosa Burgess creates analogue and digital collages through photomontage, painting, and found materials. Cut and collaged by hand using a scalpel and glue, her juxtapositions recall a rich art history of photomontage. Using publications from the 1960s and 70s predominantly, Rosa’s collages confront gender construction and its ties to capitalism and consumer culture. Her collages combine soft advertising images such as kittens and flowers, with hyper-sexualised imagery from male-centric publications including bodybuilding magazines and old fetish zines. By combining opposing societal notions of femininity Rosa’s photomontages evoke empowerment, non-conformity, and desire.
